What Causes Disc Bulges?

When a vertebrae is out of alignment, it can cause decay and degeneration in the discs. This causes the discs to become thinner, so they aren’t able to provide as much cushion between the vertebrae and they can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain. Left unaddressed, the condition can cause calcium to build up around the joints, resulting in osteoarthritis.

Dr. Rick uses a car analogy to help patients understand: If the front end of your car is out of alignment, the tires will wear out prematurely. Similarly, if your spine is out of alignment, your discs will wear out prematurely. By restoring proper spinal alignment, joints can regenerate to a degree, so the discs can get thicker over time with appropriate care.

Our Approach

We begin your healing journey with a comprehensive assessment, including spinal X-rays to identify the alignment issues that are contributing to your condition. X-rays also allow us to ensure there are no other health issues contributing to your condition. Based on your specific situation, we will tailor care to restore alignment using gentle manual techniques.

Although it can take quite a bit of time to correct the underlying problem and allow the discs to fully heal, many patients feel noticeable relief within one to three visits.

Conservative Care First!

Surgery should always be a last resort—after all, it can’t be undone! So we always recommend a conservative approach first using chiropractic care to restore optimal alignment and giving the discs a chance to heal. There is a time and place for surgery, but we believe it should be the last resort, not the first choice.
